Fall 2013 Classes

SHHC is pleased to announce its classes for Fall 2013.  Family Membership is open until August 11th or until all membership slots are filled.  All families are required to be members of SHHC in order to attend our Co-Op classes.  Family Membership fees cover enrollment for all of your children into one class per period for the entire 12 week semester.

Please note that while we are making every effort ensure that these are the classes (and schedule) that will be offered this fall, there remains the possibility of changes needing to be made due to unforeseen circumstances.  Also, please be aware that some of these classes may require a small supply fee which will be indicated prior to Class Registration on August 12, 2013.

First Period

K-2nd

Learning Games:  We will have lots of fun playing original, entertaining and slyly educational games.  The games will cover language arts, math, logical thinking, spatial awareness, science, and history.  Reading and writing are not required.

The Ten Commandments for Kids: Hey kids, let’s dive into God’s 10 commandments.  We’ll learn all 10  commandments and what they mean.  We will have fun activities that will include crafts, snacks, and Bible time. We will watch the Kid’s Ten Commandments episodes that teach us about God’s commandments through the adventures of an Israelite boy and his family and animal friends.  Come and learn about God’s gift of the 10 commandments.

3rd-5th

Georgia State Study: We will learn about our state’s history and make a state notebook covering such topics as state symbols, geographic regions, government, tourism, famous people/inventions, industry and more.

12 Days of Christmas: Each week of this class will offer children the opportunity to create different gifts for their family, friends and others special to them.  This class will appeal to both boys and girls because they will be working with a variety of resources and materials.  This won’t be a basic arts and crafts class and children will be working on projects such as hand woven coasters, personalized mugs, bleach designed t-shirts, recycled sweater mittens, sisal rope covered storage containers, fabric covered journals and pom pom bookmarks (to list a few).  We will use equipment such as hot glue guns, sewing machines and needles, we will work with chemicals such as bleach and we will incorporate a variety of math and science skills as we perform calculations and experiments to get the desired results we are seeking for some of the gifts.  Supply fee will be $5 per child plus some additional items will be requested.

6th and Up

MythBusters*: A science inquiry class. Just like the popular tv personalities, we will follow the scientific method to prove or disprove known myths and present our data in a logical and concise manner.  Each student will participate in classroom hands on projects and will work on a guided personal presentation at home. (* MythBusters is a registered trademark of The Discovery Channel.)  Supply fee will be approximately $5 per child.

Natural Remedies and First Aid: This class will include discussion, homework assignments, and hands-on projects. Planned topics include: germ theory vs. terrain theory, healthy snacking; sports drinks, natural personal care products (for guys, too!), assembling simple first aid kits, and more.  Students will need to supply a 3-ring binder, notebook paper and pen.

Second Period

K-2nd

Getting to Know Great Artists:  Students will learn a bit about artist biographies and their most famous works, while creating a replica of their masterpieces.  They will also compile their own personal portfolio to be taken home at the end of the semester.  Supply fee will be $3 per child.  Children will also be asked to bring recycled items from home including paper towel rolls, cereal boxes and old magazines.

LEGO Building: LEGOs will be used to reinforce concepts in the areas of math, language, science and social studies.  There will be a lesson and activity each week in which the children will use LEGOs to work individually and as a team to complete the assignment. Supply fee will be $5 per child.

3rd-5th

Little House in the Big Wood Book Club:Children will read a chapter of the book at home during the week (or listen to an audio version). We will discuss the chapter in class and do activities relating to the chapter such as making candy, pudding, butter and studying about bees and honey. This class will be fun for girls AND boys as we explore how people lived as they settled in the West. There is no supply fee for this class but children will be given a supply list after registration.

3rd-7th

Anatomy and Dissection: We will review major organs and systems in the human body (circulatory, respiratory, skeletal/ muscular, digestive) and then dissect several small animal specimens to see examples of these systems up with our own eyes!  Class will require use of sharp objects so maturity to handle this responsibility is a must.  Children will work in pairs to dissect a minimum of 3 specimens.  Supply fee will be $10 per child.

 6th and up

Let’s Get Creative!:  We will be using drama games, group activities, and class projects to help kids think creatively.  “But I’m not an actor!”  No problem.  There is a lot more to being creative than just “acting”.  Observation, memorization, sensory awareness, nonverbal communication, trust, cooperation, thinking outside the box, etc… The skills we use in this class go far beyond the stage.

Introduction to Car Care/Auto Maintenance:  Do you know how a car works? If you’re planning on driving one day, there are lots of things about an automobile that you should know!  This will be a hands-on class for guys and girls. You will go over a car bumper to bumper, learn parts of the car, learn how to check tire pressure and change a tire, learn how to change oil, etc.. Participants will have the opportunity to view a private car collection.

NOTE: Preschool Age children and younger will be enrolled in an age-appropriate class during both periods where they will have supervised learning activities, snacks and free-play time.

Omni Fair 2012

SHHC hosted its first ever Omni Fair this spring with great success!

What is an Omni Fair? Basically it is a science fair that is not limited to only science projects. The project categories included: science, history, geography, literature and art. Projects were grouped by age and were reviewed or not according to each participant’s preference.

A group of four independent judges critique the reviewed projects, and there were first place and honorable mention awards in each age group (3rd-5th and 6th & up) as well as participation awards for everyone. A ‘scavenger hunt’ was held which encouraged guests at the Fair to search through the projects for answers to questions that each project participant had provided.

In addition , the spring Pinewood Derby class held a race with the derby cars they had made this semester. Competition was fierce but fun! All the kids loved their trophies!

To round out the evening, there was a short program which featured musical and oral recitations from students as well as a set of commercial clips produced by this spring’s History of Film class.

All in all, it was a great night for SHHC students and families. We look forward to an even bigger and better Omni Fair next spring!
