Fall 2014 Registration Now Open

Registration for the Fall 2014 semester of South Hall Homeschool Co-Op is open!

Here are the details:

Our meeting time and location will remain the same– Tuesday afternoons @ Hopewell Baptist Church. The optional PE Games period will begin at 1:15 pm and regular class sessions will start at 2:00.

In order to be eligible for discounted fees for lead/co-lead teachers, your class subject must be pre-approved by Wendy or Rachael (please email or call us to discuss).  Families new to SHHC this year are eligible to participate as “assistants only” during their first year– or they are certainly welcome to teach/co-lead teach a class!!!

All new SHHC families must complete a Registration Form, Participation Agreement and sign a Statement of Faith (links in the sidebar). Please email us if you need the address to send your documents and/or registration fees. Payment may be made by cash, check or PayPal (links in the sidebar).  Please know if you choose to pay via PayPal, you will see a small addition to your total which is to cover the cost of PayPal’s fees.

Our list of class offerings will be published around July 1st.  New families wishing to take advantage of early registration discounts, please be aware that our classes will be available for children from preschool through middle/high school as well as childcare for infants. Elementary age and higher classes will be available in age-appropriate ranges (typically K-2nd, 3rd-5th and 6th and up). Our parent-led classes are typically enrichment type– you can see the actual classes we’ve offered in the past at the link on the sidebar.  If you have questions about potential classes for this fall before July 1st, please email us and we’ll be happy to let you know which classes we currently have teachers for.

Winter/Spring 2014 Classes

SHHC is pleased to announce our class offerings for the Winter/Spring 2014 semester.

Family Membership is open until December 15th, 2013 or until all membership slots are filled.  All families are required to be members of SHHC in order to attend our Co-Op classes.  Family Membership fees cover enrollment for all of your children into one class per class period (two) for the entire 12 week semester. In order to register your family for membership, you must submit the three registration documents and your fees payment (either by check or PayPal.).  Please email us at the address on the blog sidebar if you need a mailing address to send your documents.

Please note that while we are making every effort ensure that these are the classes  that will be offered this winter/spring, there remains the possibility of changes needing to be made due to unforeseen circumstances.  Also, please be aware that some of these classes may require an additional small supply fee which will be indicated prior to Class Registration on December 17, 2013.

K-2nd

 
Little House Books & Crafts: Make crafts from My Little House Crafts Book to learn how Laura and other pioneers lived, worked, and “made-do” with what they could fashion for themselves.  My First Little House books will be used to provide the background story for each craft.

Draw Write Now “Animals” : Use the Draw Write Now book series to learn about animals.  Students will be making an animal notebook/journal.  May also include other literature and activities.

Olympics Unit Study:  Prepare for the upcoming Winter Olympic Games by learning all about the Olympics!

Dinosaurs Unit Study: In this hands-on class, we will explore the dinosaurs from a creation science perspective. We plan to do lots of fun activities like make fossils and play classification games.

 

3rd-5th

Duct Tape Weapons: In this class we will study the weapons of Medieval Warfare & their uses, then construct our own weapons using pvc pipe, foam, cardboard, & duct tape. (Each child will keep the weapons they make). We will also learn and become familiar with the rules of war and what it means to be chivalrous in warfare!

Poetry Unit Study: A creative and structured class where we will be learning the history of poetry, learning the different styles and creating our own works of art.

Getting to Know Great Artists:  Students will learn a bit about artist biographies and their most famous works, while creating a replica of their masterpieces.  They will also compile their own personal portfolio to be taken home at the end of the semester.

Solar System Unit Study: The class will include making a notebook with information about planets, stars, etc. as well as each child creating their own solar system model.

A Trip Around the World:  Countries, Crafts and Cooking… We will be  learning interesting facts and the way of life in 6 different countries (Venezuela, Antarctica, South Africa, Israel, Italy, and Russia). and making and craft and cooking an authentic recipe from each country. 

 

 
 
5th and up

Mini Weapons: We will be manufacturing gadgets based on the book, Mini Weapons of Mass Destruction 2, by John Austin. Planned projects include a Binder Beretta 92, a Cotton Swab 38 Special, and a Mint Tin Catapult. Students must be capable of safely using craft/razor knives to cut plastic pieces (empty glue sticks, marker casings, milk caps). 

 
6th and up

Let’s Get Creative!—Part II:  We will be using drama games, group activities, and class projects to help kids think creatively.  “But I’m not an actor!”  No problem.  There is a lot more to being creative than just “acting”.  Observation, memorization, sensory awareness, nonverbal communication, trust, cooperation, thinking outside the box, etc… The skills we use in this class go far beyond the stage. 

Care/Auto Maintenance:  Do you know how a car works? If you’re planning on driving one day, there are lots of things about an automobile that you should know!  This will be a hands-on class for guys and girls. You will go over a car bumper to bumper, learn parts of the car, learn how to check tire pressure and change a tire, learn how to change oil, etc.. Participants will have the opportunity to view a private car collection. 

Team Building with Teens: We will do activities and creative games that will build self-esteem, teamwork skills, leadership, communication, coping skills, decision making, etc.

Yearbook: The goal of this class is to produce a yearbook for our Co-op. The students will use and develop skills in planning, photography, journalism, and teamwork in order to accomplish the basic task of yearbook production. There will be some outside class time required for students on the yearbook staff.  All students enrolling in this class must commit to performing tasks as assigned.

Crime Solvers: We will be looking at three fictional criminal cases. Beginning with an evaluation of the crime scene photos, the student investigators will analyze lab reports, phone messages, and interviews to extract key information. Students will sort through the evidence as they work to identify the person responsible for each crime. Students are given additional sets of information as they make their way through the case, requiring them to reevaluate their potential suspect each week. The students will explain the means, motive, and opportunity for each of the suspects in addition to a thorough analysis of the evidence and a recreation of the case. Eventually students are able to determine which suspect should be charged with the crime!

SHHC is pleased to announce its classes for Fall 2013.  Family Membership is open until August 11th or until all membership slots are filled.  All families are required to be members of SHHC in order to attend our Co-Op classes.  Family Membership fees cover enrollment for all of your children into one class per period for the entire 12 week semester.

 Please note that while we are making every effort ensure that these are the classes (and schedule) that will be offered this fall, there remains the possibility of changes needing to be made due to unforeseen circumstances.  Also, please be aware that some of these classes may require a small supply fee which will be indicated prior to Class Registration on August 12, 2013.

 
First Period

K-2nd

Learning Games:  We will have lots of fun playing original, entertaining and slyly educational games.  The games will cover language arts, math, logical thinking, spatial awareness, science, and history.  Reading and writing are not required.

The Ten Commandments for Kids: Hey kids, let’s dive into God’s 10 commandments.  We’ll learn all 10  commandments and what they mean.  We will have fun activities that will include crafts, snacks, and Bible time. We will watch the Kid’s Ten Commandments episodes that teach us about God’s commandments through the adventures of an Israelite boy and his family and animal friends.  Come and learn about God’s gift of the 10 commandments.

 
3rd-5th

Georgia State Study: We will learn about our state’s history and make a state notebook covering such topics as state symbols, geographic regions, government, tourism, famous people/inventions, industry and more.

12 Days of Christmas: Each week of this class will offer children the opportunity to create different gifts for their family, friends and others special to them.  This class will appeal to both boys and girls because they will be working with a variety of resources and materials.  This won’t be a basic arts and crafts class and children will be working on projects such as hand woven coasters, personalized mugs, bleach designed t-shirts, recycled sweater mittens, sisal rope covered storage containers, fabric covered journals and pom pom bookmarks (to list a few).  We will use equipment such as hot glue guns, sewing machines and needles, we will work with chemicals such as bleach and we will incorporate a variety of math and science skills as we perform calculations and experiments to get the desired results we are seeking for some of the gifts.  Supply fee will be $5 per child plus some additional items will be requested. 

6th and Up

MythBusters*: A science inquiry class. Just like the popular tv personalities, we will follow the scientific method to prove or disprove known myths and present our data in a logical and concise manner.  Each student will participate in classroom hands on projects and will work on a guided personal presentation at home. (* MythBusters is a registered trademark of The Discovery Channel.)  Supply fee will be approximately $5 per child.
 
Natural Remedies and First Aid: This class will include discussion, homework assignments, and hands-on projects. Planned topics include: germ theory vs. terrain theory, healthy snacking; sports drinks, natural personal care products (for guys, too!), assembling simple first aid kits, and more.  Students will need to supply a 3-ring binder, notebook paper and pen.

Second Period

K-2nd

LEGO Building: LEGOs will be used to reinforce concepts in the areas of math, language, science and social studies.  There will be a lesson and activity each week in which the children will use LEGOs to work individually and as a team to complete the assignment. Supply fee will be $5 per child. 

  
3rd-5th

Little House in the Big Wood Book Club:Children will read a chapter of the book at home during the week (or listen to an audio version). We will discuss the chapter in class and do activities relating to the chapter such as making candy, pudding, butter and studying about bees and honey. This class will be fun for girls AND boys as we explore how people lived as they settled in the West. There is no supply fee for this class but children will be given a supply list after registration.

 
3rd-7th

Anatomy and Dissection: We will review major organs and systems in the human body (circulatory, respiratory, skeletal/ muscular, digestive) and then dissect several small animal specimens to see examples of these systems up with our own eyes!  Class will require use of sharp objects so maturity to handle this responsibility is a must.  Children will work in pairs to dissect a minimum of 3 specimens.  Supply fee will be $10 per child.

 6th and up

Fall 2012 Registration

Early Registration for the Fall 2012 semester of South Hall Homeschool Co-op is now open!  
 SHHC will meet for classes on Tuesday afternoons at Hopewell Baptist Church (Hwy. 60/Poplar Springs Road in Gainesville, GA). Classes are scheduled to begin on September 11th.

All families wishing to join SHHC will need to complete a Registration Form as well as sign a copy of the Participation Agreement and Statement of Faith (available for download on the right sidebar of this blog). These documents as well as applicable registration fees must be submitted by the deadline in order for a space to be guaranteed for your family with SHHC.

Regular Registration Family Membership (July 2nd- August 13th) fees are as follows:
$55 per family (parent agrees to be an ‘assistant only’)
$35 per family (parent agrees to ‘lead teach’ one class**)
$45 per family (parent agrees to ‘co-lead teach’ one class**)

** All persons wishing to receive the lead/co-lead teaching discount must have pre-approval of their class subject– please email us at the hotmail address if you have not already done so.***

We currently are in need of teachers for a PE Games class as well as the K-2nd and 3rd-5th age ranges and possibly one 6th & up class.  If you are interested in lead or co-lead teaching, please let us know a.s.a.p.!!

We will not have our complete list of class options available until after we know what our parents have agreed to teach.
